It rained on our last day in Maine, which also happened to be the day we had plans to walk on Short Sands Beach. Knowing we were in store for a damp weekend, I made sure to pack wet weather gear for the entire family. I have to admit that I had secretly hoped it would rain for at least a little while on this trip since there is something about the rain that makes a beach more beautiful.
The wind was really gusting, and I kept checking with Brian if Bennett was ok presuming he would be bothered by the combination of wind, rain and ocean spray, but he was perfectly content the entire walk. He just stared into the ocean and laughed when we went closer to the waves.
I know you guys have been seeing a lot of this raincoat lately, but I truly wear it all the time. This spring has been an exceptionally rainy one in New England so Bennett and I have been donning our matching yellow slickers quite a bit. I’ve been trying to convince Brian to get one as well so we can complete our little yellow raincoat squad.
I’ve always preferred the landscape of northeast beaches. The rockiness gives the shoreline colorful and textural beauty. And the ocean seems more wrathful up here, illustrating the courage of fishermen who have historically risked their lives venturing out and making me wonder how many shipwrecks were beneath the surface of that water. Since we’re not there to swim but only to witness nature’s masterpiece, we didn’t mind seeing the ocean in its fury.
I hope you all get your time to experience Maine’s breathtaking coast. Or better yet, maybe you’ll have a chance to explore one of its beautiful beaches in the rain. After our walk we dried off and warmed up with some local coffee and enjoyed an amazing breakfast at Mollyo’s (a local favorite)!
