This past Saturday, Brian, Bennett and I celebrated our sweet baby Austyn turning one year old. Her actual birthday was April 25th, but I decided about a minute after she was born that her first birthday would be celebrated in theme of all things Derby. The Kentucky Derby is a sporting event I look forward to watching every year, and I can only hope Austyn grows up loving the spirit of the Derby Day as much as I do.
In theme with the southern event I spent much of the day cooking some traditional southern food, including country-style ribs, squash casserole and some homemade biscuits. I also made Austyn a strawberry cake using a recipe I came across in Southern Living, but I substituted the strawberry buttercream frosting for cream cheese frosting and just put sliced strawberries and whipped cream in between the cake layers. Then I topped the simple cake with toy plastic horses in the theme of the race. It was so delicious, and I encourage you to give the cake a try! Brian and I also sipped on my favorite version of the Mint Julep which also includes strawberries!
My dress is actually years old and by LaRoque, a boutique I used to frequent when living in South Carolina, but I found some other yellow floral dresses I love here and here. I was ecstatic when I stumbled upon my hat at an antique market, but I found similar hats here here and here. Austyn’s Janie & Jack dress is so sweet, and I adore the mint color. It appears as though her exact dress is unavailable, but this one is very similar. I was also thrilled to find her cute little hat at Target and for UNDER $8.00! Hope you have a wonderful rest of your week!
