A few weeks ago I shared a post about how completely eliminating coffee from my diet not only suppressed my migraines, but also improved daily low grade anxiety I didn’t recognize I was experiencing. I shared that I replaced coffee with a daily matcha latte which provided a more calming source of energy. An iced matcha (green tea) latte from Starbucks is absolutely AMAZING, but the $5.50 price tag and the amount of sugar it contains makes it more of a treat for me to enjoy in moderation than a daily purchase.
So I began to experiment with making matcha lattes at home to come up with a go-to recipe to jumpstart my day. And as it turned out, the more simple I kept the latte recipe, the more I liked it. I recommend making your matcha lattes with just pure matcha powder and checking the ingredients to be sure it doesn’t contain any kind of sugar. I use Carrington Farms matcha tea powder which I am able to find at my local grocery store but you can also order it online HERE. I’ve tried a few different brands but reverted back to this one since I found that it gave me the most energy and I prefer the taste. I can’t tolerate dairy and originally tried preparing the lattes with soy milk since that’s how I order it at Starbucks but ending up switching to almond milk because I have found it allows the matcha powder to be more thoroughly blended with less clumping. Of course you can use whatever milk you prefer! I use a vanilla flavored almond milk, which I find to be sweet enough, but if I need just a little sweetness that day, I also add a little vanilla syrup.
Another gadget I like to use while preparing my latte is this frother. You can certainly just stir or whisk but the frother blends the matcha latte more thoroughly and adds a delicious foamy layer to the top. It also makes me feel a little fancy!
INGREDIENTS-
Pure ground matcha powder
Vanilla almond milk (or milk of choice)
Vanilla syrup (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS-
- Combine 2 tsp of matcha powder for every 1 cup of almond milk (I like to sift the matcha first to prevent clumps and use my frother to mix in a mason jar).
- If desired, add 1 tsp vanilla syrup and continue to mix.
- Add ice, a straw and enjoy!
